How to Stay Healthy While Traveling Abroad

When traveling to different countries, there are certain things that it is wise to do to stay healthy.

First of all, get all recommended immunizations for your destination(s) and get a physical and an eye check before you depart. This will get you off to a good start.

While you’re away, consider the following advice.

Specific Recommendations

Stay hydrated.

Having enough water is more important than eating enough. If you have any doubts about whether or not the water is safe to drink, boil it before drinking. Even bottled water in some countries cannot be trusted. It’s best to boil and treat the water before drinking it if you have the slightest doubt.

Acclimatize to Altitude.

If you are headed to a high altitude destination, take a few days so that your body can adjust before doing anything strenuous. Altitude sickness can ruin your vacation. Start out slow, drink plenty of water, and ease into your new environment.

Street Food.

Adjusting to food also takes some time and care.  It’s best not to eat anything that is uncooked or already peeled.

If you are watching food being cooked, then put on your plate, you can be pretty sure that it’s okay to eat, since the cooking process generally makes things safe to eat.

Keep hand cleanser in your pocket and use it generously.

One of the quickest ways to get sick is to keep going when you are tired. Don’t do it. Be sure that you get enough sleep and that you give your body ample rests during the day.

Sitting for a few minutes to get your second wind is wise. Do it as often as you feel necessary.

Keep Proof of Insurance With You.

If something happens, you’ll have the details you need to get treatment.

There are many, many detailed guides for staying healthy in specific areas. Read them before departing, take them with you, and take their advice to heart.

Above all, take good care to stay hydrated and get enough rest and you should be fine.
